Accountability in New Mexico Vistas
NM Vistas is based on the idea that schools should be recognized for excellence and supported in the ways they need support. Throughout the site, NM Vistas maintains a focus on reciprocal accountability. In other words, schools that are succeeding are recognized for their success, and schools that need help are identified so that help can be provided. In this way, NM Vistas supports strong relationships and a shared vision with a clear path to bright futures for every school and every student in New Mexico.

Designations of Excellence
Schools with an overall NM Vistas score that places them in the top 25% of schools in the state are awarded the Spotlight designation. Schools that score in the top 10% for any of the NM Vistas measures are awarded the Designation of Excellence for that measure.
Highlighting Academic Performance
The NM PED recognizes the importance of math and reading, so NM Vistas measures them equally and reports each separately. In addition, for math and reading, both achievement and growth are measured so we can see how well a student is doing now and how much they have improved over the past year.
How schools are held accountable
NM Vistas uses a set of indicators that show different ways schools can succeed. For each indicator, NM Vistas includes one or more measures that help identify schools that are succeeding and schools that need more support in the area represented by the indicator. Schools receive points for their performance on each measure, and the number of points a school receives shows how well the school is doing in that area. NM Vistas includes 13 measures across four indicators as shown in the table below. The points for each measure are also added together to create an overall score for each school. Schools receiving fewer points than other schools are identified so that they can be given extra support to ensure they are successful. Not every school will have data for all measures. For example, only high schools are included in the graduation measures. When a school does not have data for a measure, the measures for which the school does have data are expanded so that the total number of points a school can earn is always 100.

Using Performance to Determine School Improvement Interventions
Each measure reported by NM Vistas represents an important way schools can succeed to prepare students for their future. By scoring each measure, we can not only identify schools that may need more support, we can also identify the areas in which the school needs help. This helps to select the best approach to help the school improve.
NM Vistas provides information for all public schools in New Mexico, including locally-authorized and state-authorized charter schools.
There are a lot of different types of schools in New Mexico, and NM Vistas tells the story of many of them. A few schools that provide special instruction or special settings are not reported on the site.
Students with Disabilities, English Learners, and Other Student Groups
NM Vistas provides information for a variety of different students, including those with the most significant cognitive disabilities and English learners. Data are also provided for females and males, students of different race/ethnicity, migrant students, students connected to the U.S. military, and for students who are economically disadvantaged, experiencing homelessness, or who are in foster care.
Valid and reliable measures
NM Vistas uses data provided to the NM PED by school districts to count and describe students. Statewide test data, such as the data from the TAMELA assessment, are provided to the NM PED by the vendors who create and score the test. The NM PED reviews and certifies these data before using them to report on school success.
