Academic Proficiency
Academic proficiency measures performance on state math, reading, and science tests. Proficiency measures whether students are meeting gradelevel expectations.
Proficiency rates
Proficiency rates measure the percentage of students who have mastered key content in math, reading, and science for their grade level.
Reading proficiency
What does this mean?
The reading proficiency rate measures the percent of students who are reading at the expected level, or higher, for the student's grade.
How was this calculated?
Students in grades kindergarten through grade 11 are assessed in reading. The reading proficiency rate is the number of students who are at grade level or higher in reading divided by the total number of students who took the reading assessment or 95 percent of enrolled students in the school, whichever is greater.

What does this mean?
The math proficiency rate measures the percent of students whose ability in math is at the expected level, or higher, for the student's grade.
How was this calculated?
Students in grades 311 are assessed in math. The math proficiency rate is the number of students who are at grade level or higher in math divided by the total number of students who took the math assessment or 95 percent of enrolled students in the school, whichever is greater.

What does this mean?
The science proficiency rate measures the percent of students whose knowledge in science is at the expected level, or higher, for the student's grade.
How was this calculated?
Students in grades 4, 7, and 11 are assessed in science. The science proficiency rate is the number of students who are at grade level or higher in science divided by the total number of students who took the science assessment or 95 percent of enrolled students in the school, whichever is greater.

Schools that score in the top 10% for any accountability measure receive the Designation of Excellence for that measure.
How was this calculated?
Schools that score in the top 10%, in comparison with other schools in New Mexico, for any accountability measure receive the Designation of Excellence for that measure.

What does this mean?
This graph helps us understand whether the percentage of students who have achieved proficiency in math, reading, and science is increasing or decreasing. The NM PED supports schools to help them improve their proficiency rates.
How was this calculated?
The percentage of students who are meeting gradelevel expectations is measured every year. The colors stand for the different subjects  math, reading, and science  and the symbols show the percentage of students who were proficient in that year. The lines connecting the symbols help to understand whether the percentage went up from one year to the next or if it went down.

Participation rates
Schools are expected to test 100% of students in applicable grades, and participation rates of 95% or higher are considered to be very good. However, participation rates of less than 95% automatically lower a school's academic proficiency rate.
Reading participation
What does this mean?
The reading participation rate measures the percent of enrolled students in grades 38 who took the statewide reading test.
How was this calculated?
The reading participation rate is calculated as the percent of students enrolled in grades 38 who took the statewide reading test divided by the total number of students enrolled in grades 38 at the school. Students must have been enrolled for at least 10 school days and they must have been enrolled at the time the test was given to be included in the participation rate calculation.
